Heart disease is the general term used for many heart conditions. Coronary artery disease is the most common of these conditions. In order to function properly, the heart must receive a constant, reliable flow of oxygen-rich blood. When this flow is constricted by narrowed or hardened arteries, coronary artery disease occurs. In turn, coronary artery disease can cause a heart attack, which is the death of a portion of heart muscle. This condition is known as myocardial infarction.

Having heart disease also increases the risk of stroke. People with some form of heart disease are twice as likely to have a stroke as those without it.
