Just as its name implies, arthritis (from the Greek "arth" meaning joint, "itis" meaning inflammation) is a condition which causes pain, swelling and limited movements in joints and connective tissue. It affects people of all ages, including children, adults in the prime of life and older people. In fact, one in every seven people will be affected by arthritis.

There are more than 100 different forms of arthritis, ranging from relatively mild forms of tendinitis ("tennis elbow" is one example) to crippling forms, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Most forms of arthritis can be managed, but because many people don't know the facts about arthritis, they put off getting proper medical help. These people may later be faced with permanent joint damage and limited movement, which could have been avoided.

So if you think you have symptoms of arthritis, get proper medical care. Early diagnosis is extremely important in managing this common chronic disease.
